This is an early 60s ? This is my very first Gretsch set and I finally own a kit made in NYC – Brooklyn, as a matter of fact, during the heyday of round badge Gretsch drum manufacturing. This is one of the most beautiful drum sets I have ever seen. The kit can look yellow, gold, red and orange depending on the lighting. I personally think it looks best in plain daylight. All tags are present in each drum except bass drum. Gretsch die cast hoops. There are some minor scratches on the bass drum but the amazing thing you can’t really see them due to this unique sparkle. The original rail mount tom holder still works great.

For any type of jazzy, funky music I would play a gretsch round badge or stop sign badge kit made of maple. For rock I would be tempted to get an old sparkle slingerland or ludwig kit or perhaps premier kit. The slingerland kits sound great but the mounting hardware is balls. A lot of old kits the mounting hardware that holds the rack toms and what not is pretty sucky. Personally, I think that bass drums that don’t have a center post for the toms to sit on sticking in the middle of the drum sound better.
I avoid every drum set that has a tom post in the bass drum except for perhaps yamaha studio kits which are nice but a whole different sound.

Vintage Drum Guide Search our web sites! I get emails all of the time with a basic drum description and a serial number from visitors in hopes I can unlock the history of their drum. I think in general serial numbers do play an important role in the commercial market especially electronics and other high end items. In the 60’s Insurance companies made it mandatory that serial numbers be put on items so they can be documented. Unfortunately drum companies never really prescribed to any code of documenting a drum based on that serial number.
In fact I once heard that they started using serial numbers not for their own use per say but so schools and institutions could keep track of instruments in inventory. I also get people asking what factory a drum might have shipped from or the exact month a drum was made or even the production numbers etc.

I would have called it a Custom 22S or something. I like the blade so much more than the rotary. A few clear coat indents or scratches but nothing through to the wood. It plays easily with low action and with the Fralin pickup it has a sweeter selection of single coil tones.
