History[ edit ] Formation and early years —85 [ edit ] The creative and song-writing force throughout Spacemen 3’s history were Peter Kember and Jason Pierce. Pierce was in a band called Indian Scalp, but he left them near the end of in order to collaborate with Kember. The two guitarists recruited drummer Tim Morris, who played with a couple of other bands and had a rehearsal space at his parental home which they used. Shortly afterwards they were joined by an acquaintance, Pete Bain , on bass. Morris and Bain had previously played together in a band called Noise on Independent Street. Pierce handled lead vocal duties. Now a 4-piece, the band originally adopted the name The Spacemen. Kember and Pierce recruited a replacement drummer, Nicholas “Natty” Brooker. They continued without a bassist and Pierce would regularly return to Rugby for rehearsals. In early , they only performed at a few local, low key venues.

But that related only to Gibson guitars made from to Present. But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows.
The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers.
About Guitars Buying a new guitar is a considerable investment for most of us. An instrument is all about inspiration. You are the musician and the guitar is the tool you use to express your feelings and music. This has nothing to do with what models you choose or how much they cost. Some basic knowledge about the different wood types, neck and body profiles, pickups etc will help you in making the best choice.
However, over the last decade or so, the MIMs has gotten a considerable face lift and the overall quality is very high. In fact, the reason why they are cheaper, ha sless to do with quality but rather lower labour costs, cheaper type of laquer and apply methods etc. Japanese Fenders are considered to be above the Mexicans and perhaps even just as good as the US. In the 80s and early 90s, Japanese Fenders were well known for being superior to any other models and the quality is still top notch.

Damn, it was so inexpensive that I could almost afford to smash it on stage! But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. This allowed some elbowroom for Gibson and Fender to rethink and retool their operations to fortify their position in the market. To avoid the same problem happening again, Gibson bought Epiphone and started building some very nice Imported Copy Guitars! Fender opened facilities outside North America under different brand names like Squier. These were all imported from Japan under different brand names.
The Univox guitars are popular today because Kurt Cobain of Nirvana used one. Here is a nice selection of their guitars. My favorite is second from right. This guitar is absolutely MINT. Vox Disco Tape So, what do you do with all those empty organ cabinets and Z stands when you stop producing Continentals? While not a combo organ by any stretch of the imagination, this thing was just tooooo weird to leave out. I wonder if perhaps it was just a joke, and was never actually sold.
Gretsch Guitars Understanding Gretsch guitar serial numbers. Gretsch used several different serial number schemes through the years. Each of them can be used to accurately pinpoint the age of a guitar, if you have the correct information.
This led me to my next topic. Wah pedals are enjoying a new resurgence, so I decided to write an article on them. I wrote a somewhat comprehensive article on Wahs for Vintage Guitar Magazine several years ago, and with Alan Greenwoods kind permission, we are reprinting that article here. This saved me reinventing the wheel. The idea for this article came about when I purchased a box of effects pedals from the owner of a music store which closed in the late seventies.
Most were new old stock Electro-Harmonix with a few other brands mixed in. I spent several hours deciding which I found useful and thought others might profit from the information.

Though its use has waned lately, it is still a mainstay with guitarists and most prominent players include at least on in their collection. Double course means two strings are tuned to the same pitch, which meant these older versions had 5 courses double strings much like our modern 12 string guitar, which can be considered having 6 courses. The 12 string guitar probably had its origins in Latin America.
South American builders came up with a variety of guitar variants. These would include the tiple , the charango and the cuatro , though not all had 6 courses of string. On the other side of the world 5 course citterns , bouzoukis and 11 string ouds were gaining favor.

The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code.
The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code. In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year. In either case, the remaining 2 digits are the week of manufacture 01 to With this in mind, remember if the last two digits of the source-date code are greater than 52, you’re not looking at the source-date code! Also it’s worth mentioning:

Greco guitars are fairly easy to date. The letter that (may) begin the serial number corresponds with the month of production, and the next 2 digits tell the year. For example: E would be a May, “Super Real” model, production number 4, Sometimes, Greco didn’t use letters and only numbers, and even separated the first digit from.
That amp worked pretty well with my Rick string. That amp turned out to be an early-production Pro-Amp. I started to investigate the world of pre-CBS Fender amplifiers. During that era Fender blackface amps, covered in black tolex with silver grilles, were everywhere. I combed through vintage dealer ads and began to pick up Fender amps in tweed, white, brown and blackface versions, trying to stick to or before.
Some of the amps in my collection have their original tubes, capacitors and speakers; on some they have been replaced. I have presented my amps in rough chronological order by era. The general information provided was obtained from books, online sources or personal observation. Other than the tweeds, where I am missing some of the high-end models, I believe you will find here a fairly good representation of Fender amp models in the brown, white and blackface eras.
I hope you enjoy what you find. Tweed Amps Back in the day, tweed was considered a pretty durable material. Tweed amps can be placed in three general categories by the styling of the front of the amp: The tweed amps depicted below are all one-speaker combo amps — not exotic, but very desirable even today for their tone. Note on Jensen alnico speakers.

At first, they didn’t have the hardware to make really good, exact replicas, but by or so, they had the correct-style hardware to match their excellent craftsmanship, and they put out some killer replicas. They beat Tokai to the lawsuit race by at least 5 years.
Eventually, as the company found that the demand for their popular replicas grew and that the size of the production was getting too large, they relinquished their Stratocaster division to Fender Japan in late Greco still retained the business of selling great Gibson clones and other brand knockoffs of extraordinary high quality up until

Unlike the pre-Fender codes, specific models are no longer designated within the serial number. Thanks to Mike Lewis of Fender for detailing the current numbering system. Finding your serial number In the beginning, Gretsch simply wrote serial numbers inside the guitar in pencil. These pencilled-in numbers often fade and become illegible, or even disappear.
After World War II, some guitars had a serial number embossed on the head, but reliable numbers didn’t really appear until the advent of the first labels, around Early labelled Gretsches will usually have a printed serial number and a handwritten model number. On hollowbodies, the label is usually visible through the f-hole.
