Anyway, I was advised that a massage would help. I never had a massage in 49 years. I know, just part of growing up American. Puritanical repression, yadda yadda. July, , I arrived in the Philippines and I spent most of that time still resisting the idea of a massage. For some reason casual sex seems like a more natural idea than having some stranger just start grabbing you all over with the sole intent of making you feel good. But with massage, one person gets pleasure and the other person gets money. Hence the comparison to the oldest profession.

During the Jurassic Period, the family had an extensive distribution in both hemispheres, extending as far north as England, Greenland, and Sweden. In majestic size and beauty, araucariads rival the grander members of the pine family Pinaceae ; both families are conifers Pinophyta. Fossil evidence indicates that ancient araucaria forests resembling present-day species date back to the age of dinosaurs. Today, araucaria forests are limited to the Southern Hemisphere and are considered a counterpart to the pine and spruce forests of the Northern Hemisphere.
Trees in the pine family have cone scales with a pair of winged ovules seeds on the upper surface; members of the araucaria family have only one ovule per scale. The seed of Araucaria is fused to the scale and falls with the scale when the cone disintegrates.

In her book “Cedar, Tree of Life to the Northwest Coast Indians,” Hilary Stewart describes how the indigenous way of life is dependent on big cedar trees: They used the rot resistant wood for graceful dugout canoes to travel the coastal waters, massive post and beam houses in which to live, steambent boxes for storage, monumental carved poles to declare their lineage and dramatic dance masks to evoke the spirit world.
Every part of the cedar had a use.

The history of British woodland since the last glaciation is, in geological time, extremely brief, and is inextricably linked with the development of civilization. Thumbnails of Table 1 click to expand summarising the history of woodlands in Britain since the last glaciation from the BCTV website. Birch and willow scrub possibly persisted along the lower margins of the ice, with pine in places.
Relicts of pre-glacial flora may have survived in sheltered bays along the western coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, but elsewhere as far as the south of England, ice swept the land clean. Tundra and moorland followed the retreating ice, and then waves of colonisation by different tree species spread from the south. The first were birch, aspen and sallow, and then about BC pine and hazel spread north, replacing birch which became uncommon for several thousand years.
Oak and alder followed the pine, then lime, elm, holly, ash, beech, hornbeam and maple in succession spread northwards. The earliest trees were those of arctic conditions; the later trees were those of warmer climates. The earliest trees spread the furthest north, with alder reaching Ireland shortly before it was cut off as sea levels rose.
The later species were slower to move north and to become abundant, as there was no vacant ground to colonise. Beech and lime did not spread beyond southern Britain. From the time lime arrived, in about , to about BC there was a period of relative climatic stability called the Atlantic Period, during which the various species settled to form a series of wildwood or wilderness types, as shown in the diagram.

Natasha Brinsmead has the answers. Buildings are given a listed status to mark their historical and architectural interest, and to protect them from damage and inappropriate alterations that may detract from their special interest. To be eligible, a building usually has to be over 30 years old. You can look at the listings in your local area at your local authority planning department, county council offices or local reference library.
Alternatively, ring the Listed Buildings Information Service , who will fax you a copy of the listing for a particular building. What is it Like to Own One? On the positive side, it means you will own an important part of history which is seen to add to the area and hold particular interest, and this can increase the value of a building. On the downside, carrying out alterations to the building — both inside and out — is a little more complicated than on non-listed buildings, although by no means impossible.
In fact, English Heritage makes a point of stating that alterations and additions are not ruled out:
It was built in several stages: In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby. Today, along with Avebury, it forms the heart of a World Heritage Site, with a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments. At this time, when much of the rest of southern England was largely covered by woodland, the chalk downland in the area of Stonehenge may have been an unusually open landscape.
The presence of these monuments probably influenced the later location of Stonehenge. This enclosed an area about metres in diameter, and had two entrances.
