The earliest civilizations which influenced the development of western culture were those of Mesopotamia ; the area of the Tigris—Euphrates river system , largely corresponding to modern-day Iraq , northeastern Syria , southeastern Turkey and southwestern Iran: What we think of as Western thought today originates primarily from Greco-Roman and Germanic influences, and includes the ideals of the Middle Ages , the Renaissance , and the Enlightenment , as well as Christian culture. Western culture is neither homogeneous nor unchanging. As with all other cultures, it has evolved and gradually changed over time. Nevertheless, it is possible to follow the evolution and history of the West, and appreciate its similarities and differences, its borrowings from, and contributions to, other cultures of humanity. Alexander the Great In Homeric literature , and right up until the time of Alexander the Great , for example in the accounts of the Persian Wars of Greeks against Persians by Herodotus , we see the paradigm of a contrast between the West and East. Nevertheless, the Greeks felt they were the most civilized and saw themselves in the formulation of Aristotle as something between the wild barbarians of most of Europe and the soft, slavish Middle-Easterners. Ancient Greek science , philosophy , democracy , architecture , literature , and art provided a foundation embraced and built upon by the Roman Empire as it swept up Europe, including the Hellenic World in its conquests in the 1st century BCE.

Sex and the Spiritual Christian 1 Cor. After the second or third message, a friend informed us that one of the men had walked out during the meeting in protest. Craig and I were shocked. What had we said that was so offensive? We were told that we were talking too much about sex. This man did not want us to meddle with his sex life. We simply spoke about sex as often as the subject came up in the Book of Genesis. If you think about it, you will have to agree that sex is a subject frequently addressed in the Scriptures, both Old Testament and New.
Though the Bible handles this subject matter much differently than the secular world, it does have much to say on the subject. I can only think of one reason for matters pertaining to sex to be so frequently discussed in the Bible—sexuality must be very closely related to spirituality.
Why Christian Women Marry Losers
Even just say one line. Finally, I mumbled some type of awkward prayer and left it at that. I was thankful when the youth pastor had moved on to the next person — my sweating had stopped.

In Part 1, Dr. In Part 2, he expands his analysis in three ways. First, he explores closely related words in the Old Testament. Hess concludes that the Hebrew text emphasizes the diversity of life — both plants and animals — with which God filled the sky, the sea, and the dry land he had created. The Bible in its original language and context does not assert that each plant and animal reproduced exactly as what preceded it the fixity of species.
It says nothing about that point. The term is applied only to living creatures as described in the Bible. It is never applied to people, abstract concepts, or nonliving objects. There is only one word that is generally agreed as coming from this root.
Are Christian guys not taking dating seriously is one of the newer posts making rounds of the old facebook, which unfortunately includes me. Young Christian men, we have a problem. This never used to be a problem, gents. My father has many memories of giving the cute girl from youth group a ride home on the handlebars of his bicycle, while my grandfather had something of a reputation for dancing with all the eligible young ladies at Christian fundraisers.
I mention this for two reasons: 1) Scripture seems not just to encourage, but to assume that part of the growth into biblical manhood is to seek marriage, so this is a biblical goal; and 2) easily the biggest complaint that I and others who advocate this approach get from godly Christian women is .
Defeating sin requires grace-driven effort. The temptation to speak before listening. Leaders usually have a lot to say. They are driven by convictions and an internal sense of mission, which can easily lead to speaking before listening. But wise leaders listen before speaking. Wise leaders gather information before giving direction. The apostle James reminds us: My dearly loved brothers, understand this: Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
The temptation to act before praying.

In contrast, in a ChristianMingle study released in January, only 50 percent of female Christians and 39 percent of Christian males said that they went to church at least once a month. Of the Christians surveyed, 90 percent of them said they would be comfortable with premarital sex and 61 percent without any strings attached.
Reading the Bible also correlates with an individual’s likelihood of having sex. In the NAE and GMR study, among those who read the Bible three or more times a week, only 20 percent of them had been sexually active in the past three months, while 60 percent had never had sex. Those who read the Bible with less frequency, “34 percent have been sexualy active recently, while 49 percent have never been sexually active.
When my now married daughters were teenagers, I honed it further for sharing and discussion with them and the young men who asked to date them. We found that this was a great help not only to our daughters but also to the young men who wanted to date them. This deepened our relationship, opened communication and created healthy accountability. Though there were sometimes nervous jitters as family members and especially the young men anticipated these sessions, in each case the time together was strategic, encouraging and rewarding.
Appearances Blog Back to Basics: Purity Culture, Consent, and the Double Standard This post is part six in an ongoing series about the basics of feminism. My parents gave me the ring in a ceremony in front of my church congregation on a Sunday morning shortly after I turned fourteen. That ring symbolized a deep commitment I was making to God, my church, and my family.
A deep commitment that said I would save my virginal vagina for my wedding night and do my best to keep from lust or tempting situations. The best relationships are a triangle, after all — two people with one eye on each other and both looking up at God. This is, in small part, purity culture. What is the double standard? But a woman who has lots of sex is a dirty slut who is the lowest of the low. But purity culture connotes much more than just the double standard.

The Christian canon differs in notable ways from the Hebrew canon. In the Hebrew Bible, Daniel is not one of the prophetic books but is classed with the Writings. That is where we will treat it and under the heading of apocalyptic literature rather than classical prophecy. The Christian canon uses the prophetic books to point ahead and anticipate the Gospel, thus creating a climate of expectation with the promise-fulfillment scheme that this ordering implies.
In fact, the Latter Prophets, for the most part, fit within the history of the books of Kings see Figure 1. Part of the challenge of comprehending the prophets collection is integrating the Latter Prophets within the historical framework of the Former Prophets and remembering that the canonical order of the Latter Prophets does not strictly match their historical order. Prophets often made use of earlier covenantal principles, and some actually quote earlier sources as the basis for their own statements.
All in all, there is a considerable network of interdependence linking prophet to prophet, and prophet to tradition. The biblical traditions are connected to regional political and ideological differences, so also ask yourself when you read the text, when did this prophet live and work? What were the political and economic conditions at the time when he spoke? Where did he prophesy? For example, it makes a big difference whether a prophet was from Judah or Israel and whether he comes from a major city or from the countryside.

Asa Gilbert Eddy m. Her father, Mark Baker, was a deeply religious man, although, according to one account, “Christianity to him was warfare against sin, not a religion of human brotherhood. Eddy or “our beloved Leader”—was still included in all articles published in the Christian Science journals. She stood before us, seemingly slight, graceful of carriage, and exquisitely beautiful even to critical eyes.
Then, still standing, she faced her class as one who knew herself to be a teacher by divine right. She turned to the student at the end of the first row of seats and took direct mental cognizance of this one, plainly knocked at the door of this individual consciousness. This continued until each member of the class had received the same mental cognizance. No audible word voiced the purely mental contact.
